Mr. McConnell's proposed strategy includes repealing the current health law and initiating a two-year delay to allow time for the development of a potential replacement plan, according to the report.

Trump reached a fit of pique on Tuesday after McConnell's best laid plan appeared to run off the rails, fuming that he was willing to let the flailing Obamacare insurance scheme die on the vine in order to force Congress to craft a replacement package.

Speaking about Obamacare, Mr Trump told reporters: "I'm not going to own it. I can tell you the Republicans are not going to own it".

McConnell's move came after two more Republican senators announced their opposition to the Republican leader's plan, which he drafted largely in secret.

Lisa Murkowski, Shelley Moore Capito and Susan Collins indicated that they would not vote to move forward a GOP repeal of the Affordable Care Act, known as the Obamacare, to the Senate floor without implementing an immediate replacement.

Polls also show that voters would blame Trump and the Republican Party for issues with the ACA, given that the GOP has unified control of Washington.

"I think we're going to air what our differences are again", said Sen. "We want to make sure that is preserved".

Still, Mr. McConnell said Tuesday via another statement that he expects a vote will take place "in the coming days". Passing it was difficult, but the longer Americans had to get used to it, the more they liked it.

Pointing to recent pushback the bill has received from some Republicans, Trump further argued that GOP senators "must keep their promise to America" and do away with the ACA.

"The next election is not until 2018, and the agenda could switch to taxes or a foreign conflict or the Trump administration's continuing problems".
